Weightlifting is a power sport based on weight lifting exercises. Weightlifting competitions today include two exercises - snatch and clean and jerk.

In weightlifting, two types of sports equipment are most often used:

bar (German stange - "rod, rod"), which is a collapsible structure, consisting of a neck, at the ends of which there are special bushings for securing the load, which is a disc of different masses, and a lock securing the load;

kettlebell (sports), most often spherical in shape and a special handle for gripping (if the kettlebell is used as part of the construction of simulators, it may have a different shape and be equipped with hooks, gripping holes, etc.). Distinguish between solid and collapsible weights. The weight of these sports equipment varies from 4 to 56 kg. In kettlebell lifting, mostly solid cast iron weights are used, the weight of which is 16, 24 or 32 kg.

At all times, people with developed muscles, demonstrating miracles of physical strength, enjoyed the respect and love of their fellow tribesmen. After all, a strong person can handle any work, and a fight is not terrible, and in battle, power and hardening are simply necessary. Perhaps that is why exercises with weights, which allow you to gain strength and endurance, have been known since ancient times.

For example, in ancient Greece, unofficial weightlifting competitions were often organized. The contestants had to throw a roughly hewn cone-shaped stone over their heads back with two hands. The weight of such stones was more than 100 kg, on one of them, weighing 143.5 kg, there is an inscription that the athlete Bibon (IV century BC) threw it over his head with one hand. Nowadays, exercise, once used only for training, has become one of the most famous and spectacular sports.

For the first time official weightlifting competitions were held in the United States in 1860, and already in 1896 this sport was included in the program of the Olympic Games. However, despite the fact that weightlifting is ubiquitous, many questions arise: is it not dangerous to health? Where to begin? How to build a workout? Can women do weightlifting? We will try to give answers to these questions, simultaneously debunking the most famous myths about this sport.

People who decide to do weightlifting need to immediately master the work with the barbell. It is by following this rule that many beginners who do not consider it necessary to seek advice from an experienced trainer harm their health. It should be remembered that for the first two to three months it is best to focus on general physical development, alternating between a variety of exercises with dumbbells, various machines and a light barbell. At the same time, you need to try not to overwork yourself, study the capabilities of your own body, strengthen your back muscles, ligaments, and gain strength. Only then can you begin basic strength training, preferably under the guidance of a specialist.

All rods are the same. This is not so - the shape, size, and weight of the components of this sports equipment are different. For example, the bar of a standard bar with a diameter of 25 mm weighs 10 kg and is the same along its entire length. And the diameter of the bar of the Olympic bar, designed for male athletes, is 28 mm (and the ends on which the discs are put on are 50 mm in diameter) and weighs 20 kg with a length of 220 cm.The Olympic bar for women is lighter than a man's (15 kg ), has a smaller diameter (25 mm along the entire length) of a shorter (205 cm) neck. There are rods with a bar in the shape of the letter T, on the lower end of which a weight is fixed, and with a curved, so-called EZ-bar. Such sports equipment is most often used for exercises, the action of which is aimed at strengthening the biceps.

Boxers do not need weight training; in fact, barbell exercises can increase an athlete's strength, and as a result, his punch will become more powerful. The main thing is not to overdo it. After all, the development of strength is directly related to an increase in muscle mass, which can lead to problems with breathing. And if a boxer gets too carried away, for example, "pumping" his arms - an excessive increase in muscle volume can lead to the fact that the arm will not be able to fully extend. In addition, it should be remembered that too frequent training with weights, conducted in parallel with the main boxing ones, can lead to overtraining. Therefore, this kind of training is best done under the guidance of an experienced coach.

Athletes who have been involved in weightlifting since childhood do not grow tall. Completely erroneous opinion. Weight training not only does not hinder, but even promotes growth. It should be noted that the average height of weightlifters is 170-190 cm, and this is not so little.

People involved in weightlifting are overweight. Misconception. Although much depends on the predisposition to be overweight, with the right load it is unlikely that an athlete will be able to acquire excessively large forms.

Barbell exercises involve the mandatory use of special drugs. This is partly true for big sports, but in amateur sports, chemistry is completely absent. And the use of dietary supplements offered by the trainer does not bring any harm to the body. In addition, a lot depends on the athlete himself - if you refuse to use any drugs, no one will blame you, punish you, let alone force you to do it.

Barbell exercises are harmful to the spine and joints. In this matter, a lot depends on the coach. An experienced specialist will primarily focus on the development of the back muscles, creating a powerful corset that prevents negative effects on the spine. Only after that do they switch to more serious training, and gradually - after all, strength does not come suddenly and not immediately, but for quite a long time. The aforementioned joint problems can also be avoided - you just need to properly dose the load. Moreover, work with weights can help get rid of some diseases - let's recall at least the well-known Pikul treatment system based on lifting weights.

Weightlifters will win any fight. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Exercises with weights develop static strength, endurance, coordination, but they cannot increase the speed of reaction, the speed of movements required in an ordinary street fight.

Weightlifting workouts for women are no different from men's. In fact, when building a weight training scheme for athletes, the coach must take into account the characteristics of the female body. It should be remembered that by nature a woman is weaker, since her body produces three times less testosterone hormone, and is less prone to building muscle mass (although muscle mass grows faster with weightlifting than, for example, with fitness).

The body of women involved in weightlifting is changing and more and more like a man's. Such changes are possible only with excessive use of anabolic drugs. In other cases, if the training is structured correctly, the body will not change, although it will become stronger.

Weightlifting athletes cannot give birth. According to studies, weightlifters with well-developed abdominal muscles do not experience difficulties in childbirth. Moreover, many women weightlifters after successful childbirth returned to sports and achieved good results.

After laser vision correction, you cannot engage in weightlifting. Much depends on the state of the eye day (retina). For example, a high degree of myopia in itself is a contraindication to weightlifting, regardless of whether the operation was performed or not. If there were no contraindications before the surgery, one and a half to two months after the vision correction it will be possible to return to strength training.
