The guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments. It can accompany other performers and be used solo. And the electric guitar, which appeared in the 20th century, revolutionized music and had a strong influence on the culture of our entire modern civilization.

The first evidence of stringed instruments with a resonating body and neck, the ancestors of the guitar, dates back to the 2nd millennium BC. Instruments similar to the guitar existed among the Sumerians, in Ancient Egypt and India.

The word "guitar" itself has undergone many changes, finally taking shape in the 13th century. And already in 1936 the first electric guitar appeared.

Today this tool is insanely popular. It allows you to create music effortlessly. However, the more popular the guitar, the more misconceptions about it. Often they relate to learning to play this instrument. Painfully many advisors are there. A person does not know where to start, and the guitar itself begins to seem not so simple and understandable. It is worth debunking the main myths about her.

Before mastering the electric guitar, you must first master the acoustic one. It should be understood that acoustic and electric guitars have different playing techniques and styles. In fact, the tools have little in common. You shouldn't waste time on another instrument - you should immediately do what you like best. And this myth appeared in ordinary music schools. With this assertion, the teachers wanted to keep in their classrooms those students who were eager to start playing the electric guitar.

You can learn to play the guitar with the help of self-guides and video tutorials. These training options are considered fast, efficient, and cheap. In fact, these techniques do not involve any individual approach and feedback. But different people need to be taught in different ways. The approach can be very different. Some need notes, others can learn by ear, others by chords, and still others by fingers. If you start learning in a different way that is closer in nature, then you can quickly become stumped and disappointed. Only a personal teacher will be able to suggest the desired option. And even if you intuitively choose the right direction, difficulties may arise. The teacher will be able to find ways to solve problems, taking into account different nuances. Self-instruction manuals involve multi-ton swotting, which is disappointing. It should be borne in mind that various video schools can be simply cheating, especially if they promise to teach something in a few lessons. And how can a tutorial teach you how to make bands (string pulling)? But this is the basis of the technique, there are many nuances in performance. It is worth considering the simply anatomical features of the students, and the technique is also selected for them. Bands are similar to strength training in fitness. Errors in technique are even fraught with injuries and sprains.

It is better to learn to play the guitar in a serious organization, in a music school. The system adopted in the music school is not entirely aimed at teaching music directly. It sounds, of course, a little strange. The purpose of such schools is to teach certain rules. Teachers are more busy not with music itself, but with drawing up endless reports, plans, keeping journals, teachers' councils. There is little enthusiasm for those within the tight confines. But a similar approach prevails in many commercial establishments. If they receive accreditation, then the personnel are forced to strictly comply with certain norms or standards. Good teachers do not meet because of the system, but in spite of it. To learn to play the guitar you need not a school, but a professional teacher with burning eyes, whom you trust. He may not be in an educational institution, but simply live in the neighborhood.

Learning to play the guitar is difficult and time consuming. According to this myth, one has to learn the theory of music, master different styles and techniques, and first master other instruments. However, this statement is true only if a person wants to become a universal musician, versed in everything. But to become a brilliant guitar player, that kind of universalism is not required. It is enough to listen to your heart and not be distracted by extraneous things, wasting your time and energy on them.

The main thing in guitar playing is technique. Technique is just a means for creating a musical image, for implementing an idea. It must be consistent with the ultimate goal. If we focus only on technique, then the question arises about the content of the music. Does the performer understand what and why he wants to play at all? Will techniques help him express himself through music? Sometimes you can amaze others with the help of simple chords.

Acoustic guitar requires nylon strings. This statement turns out to be very critical if a person is going to learn how to play rock or loves a "metallic" sound. Nylon strings are only needed for children under the age of 11 who still find it difficult to press the strings. The rest do not need to start learning with nylon strings, metal strings may well suit them. Their rigidity with proper training is not a problem.

It is impossible to learn to play the guitar with a hearing impairment. "Bad" hearing is a relative concept. All people have hearing, it is just developed in different ways. To play the guitar, and indeed a musical instrument, special natural talents are not needed. A good ear is needed if a person plans to play in a musical group, play a melody by ear, and improvise. These talents are useful, but not required. The guitar is not a violin for which hearing is needed.

You won't be able to play the guitar without special abilities. Anyone can play the guitar at an intermediate level, there is no need for special learning abilities or talents. They will be required already for a professional musical career. Ability will influence the learning process itself, improving it, but this is not a deciding factor. Even the bears managed to learn to ride a bike. The mind and the speed of mastering the material are important, the main thing is the striving for the result.

Be sure to sing along with the guitar. Today the guitar has received two variants of its manifestation: bardic and musical. For a long time people have already learned to sing with a guitar, it turned out to be better than just reciting poetry. Over time, words began to be applied to music, among the instruments suitable for performing songs was the guitar. This is how bards appeared - poets who convey poetry through songs. Gradually, the guitar became more and more popular as an accompaniment instrument. As an independent tool, it is, unfortunately, not particularly popular today. Until the beginning of the 19th century, independent musical compositions were performed on it, perhaps in Spain and Latin America. But even there the guitar was considered more of a pleasure instrument than a serious instrument for classical performance. But thanks to such performers as Andres Segovia, the guitar was still able to make itself known. This is a specific instrument on which you can perform both romances and classics. And the myth that one must sing with a guitar arose from the classical image of the guitar, the instrument of an accompanist. Even today on the stage, few musicians or groups do without a guitar, and this myth was formed. But this instrument can be used to perform works of any genre, it is not necessary to sing.

It is better to start learning with a cheap guitar. Many people decide to save money on their first tool, but this is the wrong approach. It seems logical to buy a cheap guitar first, and then, if necessary, already more expensive. However, inexpensive instruments are created from low-quality simple materials, which leads to disgusting sound. The guitar also has such a concept as playability. It is determined by the height of the strings above the frets, the health of the neck, soundboard. If you start playing an uncomfortable instrument with a bad sound, all the desire to learn further will disappear. If the guitar is initially of high quality, comfortable, with a good sound, then it will go into your hands by itself. If you really want to learn something, it is better not to save money and immediately take a good tool for yourself. Naturally, expensive models are not worth buying, the proven middle version is also quite suitable. This will make learning enjoyable. For those who are not yet fully versed in playing the guitar, it is better to call someone in the know for help. It should be a really professional, and not a neighbor who has mastered three thieves chords. In big cities, it is not difficult to find a specialist who will advise which option to choose. It's worth spending the money to play a real guitar, not a cheap craft.

An electric guitar is better than a classical or acoustic guitar. This statement hides two myths at once. Acoustics can mean an acoustic guitar with metal strings for performing songs, or a guitar that is unable to produce the characteristic electrical sound, being connected to speakers. But the second description also covers the classical guitar, and the first, with metal strings. Anyone with an electric guitar has a certain skill, he will obviously play better than a connoisseur of just three chords. But the performers of the bard song have their own difficulties. An author's vocal song is not at all so simple. On acoustics, you can play such blues that an electric guitar never dreamed of. The electric guitar and the regular guitar are completely different instruments that should not be compared. They do not have the same methods of sound extraction, and their purpose. How can you compare them then?

It is better to learn to play the guitar from a titled performer. You should not chase the teacher's laureate titles. Schools often refuse to place them altogether. No one questions the knowledge and skills of these people, but this is far from the main thing. The teacher should not only know a lot, but also be able to clearly explain this to his ward. The learning process, on the other hand, should not become monotonous and difficult; a friendly atmosphere should develop here. At the same time, the teacher himself becomes not a strict mentor, but an older comrade, inspired by a common goal. That is why young people are often taken on the role of a teacher, who are able to adapt to the required style of communication with students.

It is best to learn to play the guitar at an early age. Adult disciples clearly prove that such a statement is false. You can start learning to play the guitar at any age, you just need to stock up on confidence. People in the classroom are united not by life experience, but by their love of music. Many only after 30 years realize that it would be nice to get acquainted with the guitar, but among the students there are both 50 and 60 years old! Why not put your embarrassment aside and take an introductory lesson?

Before you start learning to play the guitar, you need to master musical notation. For some reason, many do not understand that music existed in people's lives long before the notes were invented. Their people were created to share their works and pass on to each other. But reading music isn't the only way to create music. Most blues and rock guitarists don't use traditional media at all, but that doesn't make their music any worse. The main thing is to feel it by ear, then it will be possible to select the melody you like without notes.

Children learn faster than adults. This myth may be true in other areas, but not in music. It all depends on the degree of motivation and the time spent. Usually children have more of it, because adults have a job, family, hobbies. Teens and adults do learn faster in practice if they are motivated and organized.

Long, thin fingers are required to play the guitar. Most famous professional guitarists don't have long, thin fingers at all. This is not at all so important, the main thing is that there are five of them. Some people go to play the guitar even after injuries and fractures. A real teacher will help you develop the required playing technique regardless of the type of fingers.

Learning to guitar will kill your own unique musical style. Every person already has his own style, which is not so easy to change. And this happens regardless of the level of guitar proficiency. The tone of voice in conversation, favorite words and expressions are our own music, which depends only on ourselves and makes us unique. It's the same with playing the guitar. You can try playing your favorite melody note by note, but the sound will depend on how we perceive it. Different people pay attention to things in their own way, and the same happens with music. Even if you try to imitate a certain style or favorite song on the guitar, there is no chance of accurately replicating it. Even advanced masters cannot achieve this. Therefore, even if someone is taught to play the guitar, his own style will remain. Most successful performers believe that it is necessary to meet with as many people as possible, because this will provide additional ideas and allow you to grow and develop.

Better to play with your fingers and not use a pick. This question has to do with pure psychology. It is clear that fingers are an understandable and familiar part of the body, as opposed to a foreign object. On the other hand, a pick helps to achieve a clear and vibrant sound. It is best to make friends with him and actively use him.

You can play a detuned guitar too. This is a mistake often made by novice guitarists. They either forget to tune their instrument, or they are too lazy to do it. But out of tune guitar seriously affects learning. It impairs hearing and spoils the impression of the game. So it's worth checking your guitar before playing.

Singing should be quieter than guitar sounds. Those who have already learned how to sing and play at the same time make a mistake. They try to make the guitar sound louder than the voice. But you shouldn't do that - it looks ridiculous. In this case, the guitar accompanies the performer, and not he accompanies her.

You don't have to warm up before the game. Few of the beginners know that hands need to be stretched before playing the guitar, it seems unnecessary. But there is a serious mistake here. The guitar is quite capable of inflicting sharp pain on the fingers, which can be avoided by a simple warm-up.

The wood does not affect the sound of the guitar - it all depends on the strings. Such a myth is spread by theorists who are unable to hear the nuances of sound. But it so happens that a guitar made of cardboard will sound exactly like an elite Paul Reed Smith instrument, if both there and there will be the same pickups and strings. But the vibrations from the strings go exactly to the body of the guitar, to that very tree. And you can easily feel it if you hit a note and then touch the soundboard and feel the neck tremor. The vibrations will go all over the instrument. So the characteristics of the sound conducted by the deck will be influenced by numerous factors: the type of wood, the shape of the cabinet, and even the varnish. Each deck will have its own sound frequency response. One instrument will be able to conduct low frequencies, but cut the lows, the other - vice versa. It is logical that pickups not only remove string vibrations. They oscillate themselves, affecting the signal. The sound is ultimately influenced by the body, neck and mounting. Any part of the guitar participates in the vibration of the entire system.

New guitars are worse than old ones. There is a widespread belief that earlier all items were made better and of higher quality, including guitars. It seems that in the old days a special tree was used to make the instrument, over time it could dry out, play out and improve its qualities. There is some part of the truth in this. Instruments do start to sound different over the years. It is interesting that this applies to time intervals, and not only in years, but even in months. You can play the guitar for several months, and it opens up, sounds as much as possible for its construction. In this case, the tool must be made of good wood, be of high quality. If initially the guitar is cheap, then in decades it will not improve its quality. It seems incredible to some that in the 60s and 70s they produced substandard instruments. Some of them are unpleasantly striking. And among the new guitars there are those that surpass the well-deserved "veterans" by a head. But the price for such products is just comparable to the cost of rarities.
