Karting is a race on karts (English cart - "trolley"), that is, minicar without a body, differential and elastic wheel suspension. In fact, the karts consist of a seat, a frame, and a motorcycle engine attached to small wheels. Roller coaster riding on non-motorized carts was extremely popular among US boys in the thirties of the last century. Later, this hobby was transformed into two different sports.

The first of them is racing on minicars (non-motorized racing cars, English soapbox car, billy kart), rolling down the mountain at a maximum speed of 50 km / h. It was on vehicles of this kind that the Soapbox Derby, a mini-car competition, was organized by the forces of the municipalities of several cities in 1934. The initiator of this type of competition was Myron Scott, a photographer for the American newspaper Dayton Daily News. Minicar sports flourished in the 50-60s of the last century, but since then the popularity of these competitions has been decreasing every year. Today, minicar races are held in Indonesia, Germany, Great Britain, Czechoslovakia, as well as in other countries where the terrain features make it possible to compete on vehicles that do not have an engine.

The second - karting - was invented by US military pilots during the Second World War. From the materials at hand (chassis, lawn mower engine, gas cans, pipes, etc.) they built small cars and in their free time they organized races on the airfield. This kind of hobby, which was at first spread only in very narrow circles, gained worldwide fame thanks to Art Ingles, a former pilot and mechanic of one of the companies that was engaged in the production of racing cars. It was this man who designed the first kart, which he demonstrated at the auto race in Pomona (August 1956). The audience liked the "cart" very much, and a year later Roy Desbrow, Bill Rawls and Duffy Livingston created the world's first go-kart company, and built the first go-kart track.

The popularity of karting grew every day, and in May 1960, the International Motorsport Federation officially recognized it as one of the types of motorsport. Two years later, the International Commission for Karting was created at the FIA, and in 1964 in Rome, the first world championship in this sport was held. However, after a while, the popularity of karting began to decline. The reason is simple. The first karts - low-power, simple designs that did not guarantee the safety of the rider - were very cheap and were affordable for many. Over time, cars have become more perfect, more powerful, but more expensive. In addition, higher speeds require increased safety measures as well as honed driver skills. In the end, only professionals remained in karting.

Amateurs are not allowed to participate in karting competitions. In fact, since 2007, amateurs can also participate in competitions if they have the necessary skills and own a car that meets all the requirements for a vehicle in this sport.

Maps cannot reach high speed. Indeed, most often the cards develop a maximum speed of 150 km / h. However, a lot depends on the type of engine installed on the machine. After all, it was lightweight karts (the weight of a fully equipped sports kart is 70-80 kg) were used in order to conduct experiments with various kinds of power plants that allow demonstrating record speeds. For example, a kart with a jet engine installed on it can reach speeds of up to 407 km / h.

The frame of the card can be made of anything - as long as the material is strong and light. This is not entirely true. The base of the card must be made of magnetic material. It is prohibited to use pipes made of titanium, duralumin and carbon.

Sports cards are no different from rental ones. In general, yes, but there are still some design differences. For example, the engine in the sports card is located to the right of the driver (therefore, a special heat-insulating pad is provided on the sleeve of the overalls), and in the rental one - at the back. The water- or air-cooled carburetor gasoline engine is two-stroke on sports karts, and four-stroke on rental ones. And the transmission options on sports and rental karts may differ slightly.

Karting is just an expensive hobby. For many professional racers, karting has become the first step into motorsport. For example, Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen and Fernando Alonso began their careers with this particular sport, and Schumacher, after many years of participating in Formula 1 competitions, returned to karting and won the World Champion title.

Go-karting can be done in any weather. Indeed, for many athletes, spoiled weather is not an obstacle, since there are several types of rubber: slicks, intermediate, rain and winter. In addition, it should be noted that using a special overalls, the driver has a chance to stay dry in any bad weather.

Children can only go karting from a certain age. There is a restriction, but not by age, but rather by height - children are allowed to go karting when they can reach the kart pedals. In addition, many karting circuits offer smaller and more powerful cars especially for children.

Go-kart racing is not a particularly interesting sight. This is not so - after all, karting competitions are characterized by dynamics, quite comparable to Formula-1, which is achieved due to difficult for passing sharp turns and short straight sections of the track.

Go-karting is extremely expensive. Of course, if you are a professional athlete, you should prepare yourself for the fact that you will have to shell out a tidy sum. But if you are an amateur, then such a large waste does not threaten you. 10-20 minutes at the karting track (at first you shouldn't ride longer) are not so expensive, and you will get much more pleasure and benefits from skiing than from the usual "rest" in an Internet club or in a bar. And if you, moreover, have minimal design skills, you can easily collect cards from scrap materials and ride as much as you like.

Karting is an extremely dangerous sport. Indeed, go-karting is often considered an extreme sport, but a lot of attention is paid to ensuring the safety of racers on karting circuits. First, a helmet and gloves are a must-have for any person who wants to drive. Secondly, the kart is extremely stable, and due to the small diameter of the wheels, it quickly loses speed, even if you cannot use the brakes for some reason. Thirdly, the brake rod, duplicated by a cable, is designed so that the front and rear circuits act independently. Even if one of them fails, the kart driver can brake the second. Finally, the front and rear bumpers and side boxes protect the rider and the kart mechanisms from external influences, and the chain drive is covered with a cover that prevents the chain from flying off.

It is difficult to master karting. Completely erroneous opinion. The go-kart is extremely easy to operate - even children as young as 10 years old can successfully drive this small and stable car.

Virtual racing is a good help in real mastering the art of go-kart control. Perhaps, this will help an experienced kart driver, for example, to get acquainted with the trajectory of the track and develop the strategy and tactics of the race. For an amateur, computer games are just fun, bringing a minimum of benefit. Real training at the karting track will be much more effective.

In order to move faster on the turns of the karts, you should lean inward into the car, unloading the outer wheels as much as possible. In fact, the opposite is true - you need to deviate in a turn outward, and not inward, in order to maximize the load on the outer wheels. As a result, the car stops sliding (and any slip, no matter how impressive it looks from the side, always slows down the kart), becomes more stable and can develop greater speed. The turning trajectory also matters - you need to choose the shortest one. In addition, it should be borne in mind that maps (especially rental ones) do not always have an ideal quality of settings, therefore, if possible, ask the mechanics to check the tire pressure before the race.

It is necessary to brake smoothly when cornering. This is a typical mistake of drivers accustomed to driving a regular car. The design and principles of the kart movement are somewhat different from the usual car ones, therefore it should be remembered that in karting, when cornering, it is best to keep the gas as long as possible and brake as hard as possible, without, however, bringing the wheels to complete blocking.

The seat of the kart should be positioned as low as possible and the wheels adjusted in a V-shape. Indeed, if the races are held in dry weather, it is the above-mentioned position of the seat and wheels that is optimal. If it rains, it is best to slightly raise the seat, thereby increasing the center of gravity, and the toe will have to be changed.

The tire pressure of the kart should be the same. The optimum pressure is considered to be 0.1 bar in the front wheels, and 1.2 bar in the rear. Although professional karting drivers prefer to select the pressure in each tire individually, in accordance with the type of track, the pattern of wear on the tire, their own instinct and experience.

Karting was not liked in the USSR. This is not so - karting was an extremely popular and massive form of motorsport in the USSR. The first All-Union karting competitions took place in 1962, and a year later the championships of the USSR, republics and cities in this sport were held. Athletes of the USSR took part in international competitions since 1964.

Mini car racing is going out of style because of the low speed of the vehicle. According to experts, the main reason for the decline in interest in this sport was the manufacture of cars by professional designers. The most popular minicar was in the 30-60s. of the last century, when the boys made their own vehicles, and the race was not only a way to reveal the courage and coordination of young drivers, but also a good test of their design skills and technical skills.
