Antiviruses, antivirus programs (English antiviral programs, antiviruses, AV) - a class of programs designed to combat computer viruses and the consequences of their actions.

A message in MS Office programs (especially in Excel) about a possible virus in an opened file indicates poor performance of the antivirus program. In Office programs, you can use macro languages to write special programs - macros that make applications more efficient at work. This is especially important for Excel calculation tables. There is a group of viruses - macro viruses, created on the basis of these languages. They can modify the document without the user's knowledge, erase files and directories. Therefore, the latest versions of Office provide protection against unwanted macros. When you open a program with a macro, a message appears on the screen that the macro may be a virus. This does not mean at all that the virus actually exists. But if you are not sure about the operation of the program or do not know its purpose, then it is better to disable the macro, especially at the first boot.
People who develop antivirus software write viruses themselves. But this is already a stupid assumption. Virus developers and antivirus teams are on opposite sides of the barricade. These people have completely different views on software products. The developers of anti-virus packages have their own unspoken laws, one of which is: "do no harm." This does not mean that they never wrote viruses. Most likely, they created and tested for performance, but only in isolation without going out to the general public. This is completely natural, since in order to fight, one must know the structure of the enemy's actions. For those who believe that viruses are written specifically to create the appearance of activity, I would like to say that the number of new viruses appearing per day is quite large, so there is simply no need to create additional work for yourself: to cope with the current volume.
Russian anti-virus software developers are weaker than Western experts. Of course, the Russian computer market has been on the verge of extinction for a long time. But we must not forget that some half a century ago we were at the forefront of this industry. Those specialists who stayed passed on their knowledge to the new generation. And provided that the thinking and ingenuity of the Russian person has always been more flexible (due to life circumstances), then Russian specialists are no worse than Western ones, and in some ways even better and stronger, at least in the non-standard solution of situations.
Antiviruses protect against network intrusions. One of the most common misconceptions. Let us recall that this is not the main task of antivirus programs. Antivirus - detects and blocks malicious code. In addition, network intrusions sometimes take place implicitly, viruses are much more cunning nowadays than before. All kinds of network holes, which have been talked about a lot lately, exist and will exist as long as the network itself exists. Therefore, install on your PC as much as possible a protected OS, that is, Windows NT, XP instead of your beloved and simple Windows 98, Me, etc. and be sure to systematically update your antivirus. It doesn't hurt to get a firewall yet, but that's a completely different song.
Antiviruses are equally good at protecting against all types of viruses and malware. It would be great if that were the case. However, in fact, antiviruses are quite good at protecting against Internet worms and viruses, but they are not so good at coping with auto dialers, raiders, spyware and all sorts of adware. So the user needs to be on guard all the time. Antivirus may be able to protect you from viruses, but it cannot protect you from your own stupidity.
Antiviruses catch Trojans. It’s strange: we have been familiar with the problem of Trojan horses for a long time, but we still don’t understand their harmful nature. In essence, a Trojan is not a virus! This is a service available to all programs without exception. There is no malicious code in it, it's just that the services are not used in the way they were intended. So even by definition, an antivirus should not find a Trojan.
